Apart from Shillong RTOs in Meghalaya, the state of Meghalaya has more than 19 RTOs that help the state carry out all transport related activities across the state. Here is a quick glance at the other RTOs across the state.

Major functions of the Shillong RTOs

According to the 1988, Motor Vehicles Act, the Shillong RTOs are entrusted with the following duties.

• Issuing and renewing vehicle registration certificates or RCs for all types of vehicles paying on the state roads. This includes private, commercial, heavy vehicles, and everything in between.
• Issuing and renewing driving licenses for individuals of the state. The RTOs are also eligible to issue international driving licenses as well.
• Issuing other types of licenses like conductor licenses and performing all licence related services within the state.
• Original sale certificate
• Collection of road tax for the state government.
• Inspection of vehicles at check posts and other areas.
• Issuing PUC certificates to vehicles after rigorous testing.
• Issuing fitness certificates for vehicles paying on the roads of Meghalaya.
• Issuing NOCs or No Objection Certificates for vehicles during resale.
• Conducting hypothecation endorsements and termination for vehicles in the registration certificate.
• Issuing other permits to vehicles like interstate permits, goods carriage permits, and more.

How can you register your vehicle under the Shillong RTO?

For any new vehicles, both private and commercial, would need to be registered with the RTOs in Shillong for legal use on the city’s roads. In case you have bought a new vehicle in Shillong, here is how you can register your vehicle with the Shillong RTO.

• Visit your nearest RTO in Shillong with your vehicle to start the registration process.
• Fill out the Form 20 (vehicle registration form) along with all the necessary vehicle details.
• Submit Form 20 along with the documents. Also, you will need to pay any RTO fees and taxes if applicable during this stage.
• Officers from the Shillong RTO is going to inspect the vehicle and documents and cross check with the vehicle details that you have submitted.
• Upon successful verification, the RTO will approve the vehicle RC.
• The smart card RC will be mailed to your registered address.
