What is a Fancy Number Plate?

A fancy number plate, also known as a VIP number plate, is issued for both cars and bikes. People spend lakhs of rupees on these number plates to give a unique identity to their invaluable vehicles. The fancy number plate can be 9999, 0001, 4444, 1111, and similar numbers. So, to get these special numbers for your car or bike, you need to make an additional payment at the RTO and get a fancy/VIP number plate for your vehicle.

How to Get a Fancy Number Plate?

A fancy number plate is basically allotted based on an e-auction. Hence, it is possible to get these number plates only online. Listed below are the steps you will need to follow to do fancy number booking:

Register online on the official website of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highway (MoRTH) as a Public User.

After you sign up and log in to your account, select the fancy number.

Pay the required fees for registration and reserve the number.

Bid for your choice of VIP car number

The result will be declared. You can pay the balance or collect the refund accordingly.

Print the allotment letter for reference.

Things to Remember While Applying for a Fancy Number Plate

Here are some of the things that you must keep in mind while you apply for a fancy number plate:

You can check the availability of your preferred VIP or fancy number list on the Parivahan website or visit a nearby RTO for the same

In case you do not get the chosen number plate even after winning the bid, then claim a refund 

You need to immediately pay the money as soon as you win the bid for your preferred number plate

Vehicles with fancy number plate must have HSRP plate as it is mandatory for all kinds of vehicles

It is important to adhere to all the rules mentioned under the Motor Vehicles Act of 1988, even if you have a fancy number plate installed in your vehicle

Fancy Number Plate Fee

Typically, the registration fees to get a fancy number from RTO vary from one state to another. In addition to the registration fee, you also need to make a payment to reserve the fancy number before its auction. In the table below, listed are the fees you need to pay for different fancy numbers:

How to Check Fancy Number Plate Availability?

It is important to check the availability of your chosen fancy number before actually applying for it. Listed below are the steps for the same:

 Visit the official website of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways

Click on the ‘Choice Number’ that appears at the bottom of the screen

You will then be redirected to a new page. Here, you need to select the state and the RTO name.

The new page will reveal the fancy number list that you can choose from for your vehicle

E-Auction Process for Fancy Number Plate Registration

Below mentioned are the steps you need to follow for the e-auction process of fancy number plate registration:

Register on the official website of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and get the Unique Acknowledgement Number (UAN)

Pay the registration fee (non-refundable) and the reserve price of the fancy registration number

Select the desired registration number of your choice to block the number

The registration window will be open for three days from the start of the e-auction, and bidding will take place on the subsequent two days

You can change the bid in multiples of Rs.10,000 for category 1 to 4, while for category 5, you can bid in multiples of Rs.1,000

Successful bidders will be informed through SMS and email

Deposit the balance amount online within 5 days from the declaration date.

The allotment letter will be generated after you pay the deposit amount online. The letter is valid for 90 days for registration of the vehicle

It is important to remember that once you complete the registration process, it takes 5 days for the bidding process to be completed. Moreover, the bidding process starts on the 4th day and will continue until the 5th day; only then will the successful bidder be informed.
