A Temporary Registration means registering a vehicle for a limited period of time, usually ranging between 7 to 30 days which allows you to drive legally on roads before you get the permanent registration number.
The temporary or provisional registration number consists of a unique alpha-numeric combination and is usually a sticker or a temporary number plate. Read on to learn more about how to get a temporary vehicle registration number in India.
To get the temporary registration number, you need to follow these simple steps.
Step 1: Visit the RTO of the state with the required documents, including proof of ID and valid address, and vehicle ownership proof.
Step 2: Fill out Forms 20 and 21. You can get them from the RTO of your state.
Step 3: Provide the necessary documents and submit the fee.
Step 4: RTO will inspect the vehicle, ensuring it meets the safety and emission protocols.
Step 5: Upon approval, you will get a temporary registration number for your vehicle from the RTO.
Step 6: You will be given a temporary registration certificate; you must keep it while driving the vehicle as a legal permission certificate.

To extend your temporary registration, you need to follow these steps.
Visit the local RTO before the expiration date of temporary registration.
Get Form 25 from RTO, fill it up and submit it with the necessary documents.
RTO will inspect the vehicle and give a new extension of the temporary certificate.
You need these documents to apply for the extension of the temporary registration.

To download the temporary registration form of the vehicle online, follow these steps.
Step 1: Visit the website https://parivahan.gov.in/parivahan/
Step 2: Click ‘Online Services’ in the top menu, and select ‘Forms’
Step 3: Click ‘Form 20’ from the scroll-down list
Step 4: In the new window, you will get the PDF version of the form, download and print.
Step 1: Fill out Form 20 and submit it to the Registering Authority in whose territory the vehicle is located or to the dealer selling New Motor Vehicles Approved by the Transport Commissioner.
Step 2: Deliver copies of the Certificate of Sale, Insurance, and Roadworthiness.
Step 3: To register a vehicle temporarily, you must pay the appropriate taxes and fees as outlined in the Central Motor Vehicle Rules 1989.
The temporary registration fee depends on the type of vehicle you may wish to have the certificate for. As a general rule, the following fees can give you a rough estimate of the temporary vehicle registration fee.
Temporary registration fee: Rs. 300 to Rs. 500
Temporary registration certificate fee: Rs. 50 to Rs.100
Number plate fee: Rs. 200 to Rs.300
